Why? Why are so many people against the idea of others posting links to their own skinning sites in forums or message boards?

Consider this… If you believed you were a part of a community and you thought that you had something to contribute (for free)… not software or freeware... and you thought you were doing your part to help this community grow, how would you feel if your attempts at becoming a valuable piece of this puzzle were shot down by your own people? Why can’t other skinning sites and forums play “Big Brother” to others? Why try to stomp out little brothers who would just like to grow with the idea of skinning?

SPAM… how could someone trying to list their part of the community, in the community forums be considered spamming?

Advertising… How could a site that isn’t selling anything or promoting anything be considered as advertising something?

Self Promotion… How could someone that has nothing more than a forum for people of the community to share thoughts be considered self-promotion… when the only real thing that is being promoted is the skinning community itself?

This community will NOT continue to grow instead it will be controlled by only a few major companies (just like everything else) until something changes…

Go ahead and start bashing me for this post… I am prepared.

There you go. Post your link in the "user Websites" thread please. Or if you feel that your site has something great and new to offer, try to submit a news item about it. Note that when submitting a news item, don't just give the link to your site, please do the effort of writting something about it, write a news story and give the link.

please.... no. my forum would never make the news here... and I would be scared of the backlash from that, if it did.

Also... might i suggest that people do not respnd to that thread... instead visit the sites or post their own link... so that the thread doesnt start talking about the RIAA or seomthing lame... and get all messy?

If you feel your web site has something to contribute to the community, post it as a news item then let the admins decide if it's news worthy or not.

I asked a admin here if i could do that answer was no.

maybe.. we should try kona... ??? nah... we might get flamed if it did become news.

I've seen news items in the past featuring other sites/forums but they were I believe primarily dedicated to skinning, not general discussion. That perhaps is a difference.

That said, last I looked the mods here didn't close your other thread. Flaming? Didn't see it on that thread but then I've seen *real* flaming on other boards (and usenet can be interestng).

So you made your site known and invited people to check it out and join. After that, it's up to them. If some people might feel that you're pressuring or begging them to join, perhaps you should just let it rather than act as if you've been victimized in some fashion.

no no... not just me... but others... and not just WC boards but others...

Yeah, that''''s true. A lot of places don''''t appreciate someone "promoting" another site on their boards. And yes, one can advertise and promote something that is free and not a product per se.

"Spamming" is a term some people often use for such posts/threads especially/or when someone makes multiple threads on the same issue/topic, etc. (Although it''''s not classic "spam" as in "unsolicited commercial email.")

What is often considered rude on most sites is when people who aren''''t at least actively visible as participants on a site just pop in to do what I call "drive by spam"....they post, Drop a link and then one never sees them again. Whether it''''s shilling for a product for sale or for another site, that behavior is usually not considered cool. Obviously, that''''s not what you did here. But in other places, yeah people can be more territorial and a lot less polite in their objections.

Anyway, a sticky post has come out of this here and that''''s a good place for people to put their own sites or other sites they just think are cool. So that''''s a good outcome IMO.

I forget about the "D" bug here. Drop, Delete, De etc.....

ummmm... actually i think that the sticky should be for people to post their sites link....

not any site that they like...
on Apr 27, 2004
Ah, you are correct: it's just for people to post links to their own sites. That's cool. Gives people a heads' up and people who are interested can check out the sites. And it won't be cluttered with other stuff.

This has gone a little off topic....
When I first came here I felt anything BUT welcome
My first attempt at skinning was pitiful and I got flamed by a bunch of idiots in the comments.
After 2 weeks I decided to click on the message board link to see what it did (before that point I had never interacted with human (or alien) lifeforms via any electronic devices except for outlook and telephones) (i had never been on a forum) I had NO idea why the people on the message board kept getting mad at me. Everything I did or said seemed to be wrong in their eyes. They were completely cruel and it seemed as if they felt new users were a burden. I admit I did a few stupid things but that does not excuse the inappropiate behavior exibited by everyone when a new user comes along... So back to my story... After a couple of weeks my uploads began to improve as I began to master Photoshop but I tried to simply avoid the message board. Yet I was drawn back to it... I wish there had been a stickey post stating what all the message board slang means. (troll, spam, flaming, , Mod, Admin, Noob, Newbie, WC, SD, SDC, DX, WB, IP, proggie, app, e-blast, OD) I mean how are people like me supposed to know what those mean? (okey some of them are pretty easy but it took me a month to figure out noob ) Of course I got totally flamed when I attempted to ask what they meant (particularly spam and troll) because you all just thought I was asking to be a pain in the @$$. I always meant well but everything always went wrong... On my "dream stickey thread" there should also be a thing explaining message board edicit.
Reccently I finally clued in when Jafo told me to "lurk" But I still dont agree with him that my comments wern't helpful as 80% of them were true. ( ) We are kinda of in a stalemate right now.
If I was an Admin I would create a "spamming and advertising" forum for talkitive users (such as myself ) to play in. That way the real message board would be virtually spam free!
Overall I dont think Wincustomize is very joiner friendly but once you stick around for a while it can be really cool
